You guys asked for it and here it is! I've compiled a list of common questions and answers which can now be found on our new FAQ page!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does BurntMail support POP/IMAP/SMTP access to the server?
A: We support POP3, IMAP, POP3 over SSL, and IMAP over SSL access to the server (use burntmail.com for the host). It would probably be easiest to use the SMTP server provided by the people you get your Internet service through for sending mail. This should work just fine for pretty much everyone. FYI: We do have an SMTP service in development, which will be released with Version 2 of the mail checker. Also, we can setup SMTP-Auth access to one of our mail servers for you if needed (we only do that for the paid subscribers, though - sorry!). Just send me an email at admin@burntmail.com if you would like some info about that!

Q: What happens if I decide not to pay for the account after the trial period?
A: First of all, We're not going to hunt you down and bill you! The account will simply be given an "on hold" status. While the account is "on hold", it will not accept any new email being sent to it. However, everything else still works the same. Of course, paying for the service will fix this - But in the event that you do not wish to use the service any longer, this will allow you to collect your email, addresses, or other information you may want to hang onto. The account will automatically be removed after 60 days of inactivity, which should give you plenty of time to get things in order.

Q: What's with the Logo?
A: First of all - It can be changed if you don't like it (once signed up, it's in the configuration section) As for the history of the logo - Well, thats a bit of a story. When I first put the site together, I had made a temporary logo for the top of the page while I put some of the back-end code together. It was a pretty bad logo, but the site wasn't public yet so I left it there for a bit. However, a friend of mine saw the graphic and gave me a lot of grief over it. He insisted it would look better if it was rendered in "gun metal" (of course, meaning the color/texture). After a day or so of the comments and remarks, I made up the BurntMail logo we have now - as a joke (rendering it into "gun metal"). It turned out that a number of people liked it and it was an interesting change from the usual envelopes and mail-boxes that people would try use to define their mail-system's logo. So, BurntMail now has a gun for a logo!

Q: What about disk usage and attachment size?
A: Current settings allow for 10 megs of disk usage for the trial period, and 1001MB for the paid accounts. The attachment max-size is set at 10 meg... Seems to be enough - Nobody's been asking for more!

Q: Spam filters?
A: We have some pretty hefty anti-spam software running these days. If you run into any problems with it filtering more than what you think it should, send an email to abuse@burntmail.com and we'll help you out! So far, it's been doing a very good job and we haven't had any complaints!

Q: I'm getting the "The session that you are trying to access has expired" message when trying to log in - Why?
A: This is usually caused by one of two things. First of all - check your cache settings in your browser. The defaults are usually fine but if it is set to never check the site for an updated page, it may cause this problem. The other possibility is that you are running proxy software that is caching the page when it should not be. Some "junk-buster" programs are setup like this. In many cases you can just configure your browser to bypass the proxy for the BurntMail site. Feel free to send an email to admin@burntmail.com if you require further info.

Q: Any plans for the future?
A: Currently, we have a version 2 of the mail-checker in the works. The main features planned for version 2 will be support to check POP3 and IMAP accounts as well (in addition to being able to check your BurntMail account). Tools will be added to the client to allow for checking of folders other than the default "Inbox" as well as some new filter-controls which currently need to be accessed through the page. We completed the file storage and notes sections.. There is still a calender planned - and work has begun on another spam filtering package!

Q: What's this about not supporting Netscape?
A: Netscape Communicator has a number of problems displaying the pages properly. Recent versions of Netscape Navigator do not appear to exhibit the same problems. In all reality - Most browsers will actually work just fine.

Q: Why are my "draft" messages being deleted when I view them?
A: If you view the draft, you need to tell it to save it again or it automatically deletes it. I know - this seems like an odd thing to do... I've discussed this with the developers and they insist this is how it needs to be done (I disagree - but they don't want to budge on their standpoint).

Q: What are your views on "safe lists"?
A: I have had a number of people sign up for numerous "safe lists" on my server in the past. This causes a significant amount of traffic that I consider to be abuse. Since there is rarely intent to read any of the mail sent to these accounts (and it wastes precious bandwidth) it is my policy to firewall email servers that send mail for these "safe lists". This helps BurntMail continue to offer the best user-experience possible!
